Snow is here

The snow is finally here. Went out twice this weekend. Sat, i just took Ruger out to Ylitello's land. He pushed 4 birds. no points. Saw 2 deer as well. Went for about 2 hours.

Sunday i took both dogs out to the cabin. Saw 4 birds. got 1,

Sunday November 15th

Had to check my deer stand, so the dogs came with.  They flushed 4 birds, Ruger had one flush right at me, over by my stand.  I couldn't tell if he slowed down and pointed or not.  I shot it on the wing. Scout retrived it.

I also saw the same grouse over on the ravine behind the cabin.  Both dogs creeped on it and pointed the spot after it flushed away.

Rainy Day

Went out to Ylitello's land
Saw 11 grouse.  One pack of 4. 
Ruger did flush alot of them.  He pointed once they were in the tree.  It was wet and rainy.

3 birds from today

November 10th.

Was a very nice day out.  Went out to Ylitello's land.  Saw 11 different birds.  Dogs did not point any of them.  I did shoot 3 there. 

Went to the cabin.  Saw the same bird in the same spot for the 5th time.  Still no shot at it.

Ruger wandered off, his beeper went off once, and then a bird came flying across the trail. He is starting to stop and point, especially if all alone.   I didn't shoot at that bird.

Friday November 6th

Took a half day of work.  it was too nice out to work.  Went out to Ylitellos land.  Ruger had a point on a grouse.  Each dog flushed grouse there.  saw 7 grouse in 2 hours. 

Went to the cabin.  Ruger went on point, i  heard the beeper probably 75 yards away.  then i saw a bird flying at me, i shot it.  He is startting to figure it out.



Sunday November 8th.

Got a babysitter and went to Tomich.   Only saw 2 birds.  walked the whole thing.  Ruge bumped one into a tree.   i shot it.  Retrieved it myself. 

November 1st

Went back out to the cabin.  i missed 4 birds in a row.  Bad shooting.  I flushed all the birds.  the dogs were always upwind of them when they went by.  Finally saw some scrapes and rubs in the woods. 
Ruger did end up pointing twice.  One false point, and then again he pointed one in a tree.  i don't know if it was on the ground or not to start with.  I never heard it fly.  He locked up with it in the tree. so i decided to shoot it. 

I have seen a grouse 3 times in a row in the exact same spot.  I can never get a shot off though. 

halloween

Went out to a couple spots today.  First to the cabin.  Hunted about 1 hour.  Scout found all the birds.  She pushed 2 grouse, and 1 woodcock.  Then she pointed the woodcock. 

Also went to county line.  She pushed a grouse twice. 

Ruger all alone

Took Ruger out all alone last night.  He did great.  He pointed 4/5 woodcock. Pointed 2 grouse.   We also flushed 3 more woodcocks and 4 more grouse.   

A nice October Day

Went out to the cabin this weekend.   hunted about 4 hours.  I was suprised to push 9 woodcocks.  The dogs flushed the first 3, but them settled down and i got to see some good points.  I missed all my shots.  Did shot a porpcupine.  Saw 5 grouse as well. 

South Dakota trip

A fun time.  Shot 65 birds total.

Oct 10-11th

Went out this last weekend. On Saturday, i left Scout at home and ran Ruger. he ran very well. His range is opening up, probably more that with Scout around. he stays about 30-50-20 yards. Works slow and diligent in the woods. IT was very windy, and about 30 degrees. Probably 25 mile winds. I never saw a bird at the cabin. I am pretty sure most of the woodcocks have left already.

On Sunday i went on the afternoon with both dogs. We say 4 woodcocks, not that many for this time of year. Also saw 4 grouse. Scout pointed 2 woodcocks. Ruger did 1. All the grouse were bumped. But they dogs are slowing down when they seem them.

next weekend is my first trip to South Dakota. Should be interesting.

Thursday Oct 8th

Went for a quick trip after work. Ran the dogs out at the cabin by the southern creek. Flushed 2 grouse, and 1 woodcock. No points today. Scout must of got into something. when i got her home, her face swelled up 2 sizes. Still swollen on friday morning.
Got my trip to South Dakota planned. Leave next friday the 16th for Wagner, SD

october 3rd 4th weekend

Lots of rain this weekend. still went out though. hunted 2 hours behindsp arents house and saw 6 birds. ruger pointed twice, but both birds ran out from under the point and flushed later. shot 2 birds. Scout stayed home so it was just Ruger. She hunts slower but is starting to stretch out and hunt longer now.

Went to fish creek in the afternoon. long walk down, no birds, no ducks, soaking wet.


Sunday i went out Tomich. Heard a wolf about 200 yards away howling. Kind of scary. Saw a couple birds but nothing shot.

Thursday the 1st of October.

Went out to the cabin. Shot 1 grouse and 1 woodcock. the woodcock seem to be already gone. only flushed a couple of them. Flushed 3 grouse. The dogs did not point, but ran good.

Sunday

Went duck hunting in the morning. only shot 1 mallard off county line. Went back out in the afternoon even though it was raining. Bumped lots of grouse, probably 7 in 2 hours, at ylitello's and even woodcocks. i think the rain made it hard for the dogs to scent them.

went out after work for a couple hours. pushed 4 grouse. got into the woodcocks. scout had a couple nice points, ruger is naturally backing her at 5 months old. Ruger had a couple good points too. i never had a good shot at anything. still to thick.

A better Sunday

Today started with Scout pointing a woodcock, Ruger backed her. It was nice to see. Saw lots of birds. Shot 2 grouse, 6 woodcocks. Went with 2 other guys.

The day ended with Ruger on an awesome point. He locked up. My buddies lab rushed in, flushed one, he shot, Ruger stayed locked up, and another came out. It was very cool to see it all happen.

Hot again. 75 degrees. We haven't had rain in 28 days. All the swamps are bone dry.

2nd weekend-Woodcock Opener

Went back out to the cabin today. Tons of woodcocks. probably 85 degrees though. Roughly 40 flushes. Scout flushed and flushed. Ruger is starting to range out on his own more. He bumped some birds too. I never
Scout ended the cabin hunt with a great point, held for me, i flushed. i shot it, but couldn't find it.

Shot i grouse over by county line pond. saw it in the tree. saw 2 grouse there, 2 grouse at the cabin. Very hot day.

A quick hunt

Went out today after work. Scout bumped a pair of birds. Then both dogs bumped another pair. I walked out on the end of my Ylitello's land. Bumped both sets of birds on the northern loop.
Hot still. 75 degrees. Hunted about 1 hour. No woodcocks, which was suprising.

2nd day opening weekend

Went out today to Ino. Saw 4 birds, couple of woodcock. Shot 1. Scout retrieved it. hot again. only hunted in the morning.

Opening Day

Ruger's first day. Hunted out at the Cabin. Stayed on the trails. Too many leaves.
8 woodcocks flushed, 2 pointed by Scout.

Scout flushed 2 grouse, One went into a tree, Ruger retrieved it. His first bird.

Hunted 2 hours. 75 degrees. Too hot to hunt any longer.

August 25th
Went out for the first time this year to the cabin. Only flushed 1 woodcock in about 30 mintues of walking the trails. Took the new puppy, Ruger
