Moving day

Went out to move tree stands before gun season next weekend. Saw 3 grouse. Shot 2.

November 6, 2011

Got home early from a night away in duluth and took the dogs out to the cabin.  Woodcock season ends on the 7th, so i was hoping to get out one last time.  

The dogs did well.  Scout had a great point on one woodcock that i got, ruger had a couple other points on woodcocks.  Shot 2.  No grouse found.

I went out 3 days before and got 1 grouse back on the river.  I flushed it and swung around on it.  I thought i may have hit it, so i sent the dogs after it. turns out the dogs found it 100 yards away running away. It was the only grouse i saw that day

Last woodcock weekend

Went out Saturday for the day with Jason and Deb.  We saw 4 grouse and about a dozen woodcocks at the cabin.  Ruger came along with Jason and Deb's labs.  Ruger, pointed roughly 4 birds.  Our shooting was terrible, but still a fun day in the woods. 

Sunday October 23

Went out today before the packer game. Ruger had 2 great points on grouse. My dad and I got one. Went on the cabin Ravine and got another. Bumped probably 12 woodcocks as well.

Thursday October 20

Ruger got into his first porcupine. Ended up taking him to the vet. Before that we did get 1 grouse. The dogs bumped about 6 woodcocks before they settled down and poointed a couple.

End of the trip

The end of the trip for the guys today. Overall we shot a bunch of birds. Scout and Ruger started pointing multiple woodcocks each day. Don't remember the numbers totally but we all saw birds and all had a good time. We hunted everyday except Friday.  We went to Clam Lake, Brule, Mason, and also hunted right by the cabin.  

4 for 4

Went out today with river in the rain. Dan and the crew decided to take the day off. I went 4 for 4. 3 woodcocks and a grouse. River pointed the last doodle greatly. She held. I ran through the woods got I'm front and flushed by myself. Excellent. She also pointed another on the walk back to the cabin. I walked in front and planned on shooting in the air and throwing a dead bird but as I walked in front she broke. I did not shoot. A good lesson I suppose

Went out a bunch of times since my last post.  Went on Thursday the 6th, ran into a couple grouse and woodcock at the cabin.

Saturday the 8th, i went to the Flag River and spent the day in a new spot.  No birds there, then i moved over north or Washburn and got into a couple grouse and some woodcocks.  Very hot day. Hot still in the 80's.  Dogs did not point anything.

Sunday started off with Dan, Herb, and Dennis arriving from maine.  Didn't hunt.  We hunted monday at the cabin.  Overall, between the 4 of us, we had well over 50 flushes.  Lots of woodcock.  I shot 1 grouse, and a couple other woodcocks.  It was very dry in the woods, all the swamps are dry, birds are all in the swamps near any sort of water. 
Tuesday we went to Clam Lake Area.  The day was productive, we ended up with 3 grouse, and around 8 woodcocks.  Scout pointed a couple different birds during the day.  Ruger had 1 point.  Scout is working alot better in the heat though.  Still hot, around 80 degrees.
Wednesday we went to Brule Area.  Lots of woodcocks in the slash north of the cabin.  Dan saw the most, about a dozen or so.  Everyone saw birds.  I shot a grouse and 3 woodcocks.  Dogs pointed, but they are very tired in the heat.

Clam lake

Went to clam lake and had a great day. Ended up with 8 birds. 4 grouse and 4 woodcock. Scout did great pointing some birds. Ruger was terrible. Great weather. Saw about 30 flushes.


Went out Sunday before packers started. Had 8 woodcock flushes. It was hot. Over 75. Dogs never pointed a thing. Only hunted 1 hour

2nd weekend

Went out duck hunting for the opener on sat. We shot 7 ducks and also a grouse. Pretty slow day though. We sat on a fish creek pond and also walked the river bottom for awhile c he pointed a woodcock and also some grouse.



Went out Sunday morning with another buddie to the white river cabin. Saw 5 grouse. Ruger pointed 3 grouse. Woodcock are not migrating in yet.
We did jump a couple. 4 or 5. Went to ylitello land and did not see a thing

Day 2

Went out to White river cabin. Saw 3 woodcocks. Rainy day again. Looking forward to leaves leaving. No points. Ruger ran away for about 10 minutes. Saw a huge 10 pt buck on the road.

Opening weekend. Hunt 1 for 2011

Went out today and got soaked. Scout had a nice point on a woodcock. Saw about 8 woodcock. 5 grouse. Shot one to get the dogs a bird.
